Striving to Serve the Savvy Consumer


PIERRE, S.D. – This spring, nearly 2,300 visitor industry professionals from across South Dakota attended customer service training programs hosted in 16 different communities.

Each year, the South Dakota Department of Tourism partners with communities and provides sponsorship dollars to bring in experts on personal communications and interactions. Presentation styles ranged from large group settings to roundtable work groups.

“Consumers are growing smarter and are demanding a higher quality of customer service. Here in South Dakota, we’re staying ahead of the game by providing the travel industry with chances to attend trainings and seminars that allow them to stay educated about what consumers are expecting when traveling,” mentioned Jim Hagen, Secretary of the Department of Tourism.

The training sessions have occurred every year in South Dakota since 1987. Participation in the program meets one of the requirements of the South Dakota Department of Tourism’s Great Service Star Program. 

“Industry attendance at these trainings continues to be strong, which is a testament to the commitment members have for serving the traveling public. Time and time again, consumers are sending praises to the state for leading the way in excellent customer service,” said Hagen. “We want to keep that reputation.”
