Lake County: Great Outdoor Getaways


PIERRE, S.D. – Lake County is appropriately named, as the plentiful lakes dotting the region make for great outdoor retreats. Discover the communities of Madison, Ramona, Wentworth, Franklin, Orland, Junius, Rutland and Nunda.

Located in Lake Herman State Park, the beautiful 1,350-acre Lake Herman was formed from melting glacial ice long ago. Enjoy spectacular views in a peaceful setting. Camping, boating, fishing and cross country skiing are popular activities at the park. Observe wildlife in their natural habitat of oak woodlands and prairie grasses. Walkers' Point Recreation Area is located on Lake Madison and offers another great outdoor recreational getaway.

Explore four periods of Victorian furnishings at the Smith-Zimmermann Museum, located in Madison on the Dakota State University campus. Discover early forms of transportation, farm equipment, a replica claim-shanty and collections reflecting the pioneering way of life during the development of eastern South Dakota.

Another popular attraction in Lake County is the Historic Prairie Village near Madison. This unique village includes 40 restored buildings, agricultural displays, steam tractors, an operating railroad and various other attractions. Browse the gift shop and enjoy carousel and train rides during special events. Camping is available.
