Folk Music Contest at the 2014 Sioux River Folk Festival, August 2nd


The Ninth Annual Campground Competition will be held on Saturday, August 2nd, 2014 at the Sioux River Folk Festival in Newton Hills State Park, which is just south of Canton, SD.  Acoustic vocal and / or instrumental solo, duo, and group acts are welcome. Judges will be members of the Plain Label String Band & The Union Grove Pickers.  To register, please send an email which describes your music, along with contact information to and include “folk music contest” in the subject line.


The winning act will have 15 minutes to play their hearts out in front of the crazed Saturday night crowd and OPEN for the big closing set! They'll also receive $35.35 and original Headley Eyesore artwork signed by Headley himself.  Prior winners of the Sioux River Folk Festival Campground Contest were Snakebeard Jackson in 2006; Mat D. in 2007; Northern Sky in 2008; Eric Porter & Rich Janes in 2009 and the CP Trio in 2010, Ellan Noonan & Nate Anderson in 2011, Andy Shaw in 2012, and Highwine (Xavier Pastrano, Emily Jelen, and Aaron Clark) in 2013. The Sioux River Folk Festival runs from August 1st through August 3rd.Ticket prices are as follows: Weekend pass, $35.00, Friday night only (6:00-11:00 pm), $20.00, Saturday only (Noon - 11:00 pm), $25.00, and Sunday only (11:30 am-1:30 pm), $5.00. Children 14 and under are admitted free. The price of admission does not include state park entrance fees: $6/vehicle/day or $30 for annual pass. Food and beverage (non-alcoholic) concessions are available. Weekend passes are available in advance at The Garden of Eatin’ in Canton, SD; The Co-op Natural Foods, 410 W. 18th St. SFSD; String Theory Music, 3204 S. The Sioux River Folk Festival is a great family event held rain or shine and is sponsored by the SD Friends of Traditional Music (, organized in 1975, and dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional music for South Dakotans and the region, and by the SD Arts Council.
