Brookings Launches Creative Week

Brookings, SD  -- Creativity flourishes in Brookings, as well as across the state of South Dakota. To showcase that, the inaugural Creativity Week will highlight the community’s big ideas beginning September 27 through October 4, 2014. More than 30 community-driven events will take place, mostly free of cost and open to various ages, highlighting different creative activities and outlets. Categories include: film, visual arts, speaking, local business, industry, architecture, theatre, music and artisan food & goods.

The kickoff event is the Creativity Crawl, which is designed to bring artists and creators to Main Street in Brookings from 3-5pm on September 27th for an afternoon of filling the streets (literally), with ideas, art and imagination. “We are looking forward to this event, because it will give folks a chance to get a flavor for what the rest of the week will have in store,"Amanda Quam, co-organizer, said.

A few of the other featured events of Creativity Week include Tom Daschle and Trent Lott speaking at SDSU, jazz night at the Pheasant Restaurant & Lounge, an opportunity to meet the creative minds behind Bizzy Lizzy bakery, 1 Million Cups Brookings, and an interactive feature of John Miller’s newly published book, First We Imagine: 22 Creative South Dakotans Speak on the Subject of Creativity.

The finale event is TEDxBrookings on October 4th. With a theme of "On Fire," the signature event will host 20 speakers from around the region and country to bring ideas, excitement and innovation through short talks about community, business, and leadership. Speakers include everyone from magicians and musicians to CEO's and firefighters. More details about this event and ticket information can be found

Co-organizer Scott Meyer noted, “We are excited about the events which are in the works for Creativity Week. It’s amazing how quickly people were open and interested in making this week happen. Brookings is a great community with a host of creative channels, so this event is a perfect opportunity to help emphasize the talent shared within our community.”
