National Fossil Day 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on October 12, 2016 at The Mammoth Site


Hot Springs, S.D. – The mission of National Fossil Day is to celebrate and promote public awareness and stewardship of fossils, as well as to foster a greater appreciation of their scientific and educational value.

In honor of National Fossil Day, The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD will provide many activities for children and adults.

  • Ice Age Art Contest (mixed media, crayon, clay, cardboard, yarn, chalk, paint, etc.) Preschool, Grades K-5, Grades 6-12, and adult – Ribbons and best in show will receive a Mammoth Site Gift Card. – Submission deadline is noon October 6th.
  • Storytime in the Bonehut at 11:30 a.m.
  • Scavenger Hunt- available all day
  • Prehistoric Road Show 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
  • Classroom stations from 9:30 a.m. to Noon
    • Mini Screenpicking Station
    • Fossil Impression Station
    • Fossil Prep Station
  • Lecture by Dr. Jim Mead, Mammoth Site Chief Scientist/Site Director at 1:00 p.m.

All above activities are free with paid admission. The Mammoth Site will be open from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. with the last tour at 4:00 p.m.
