5th Annual South Dakota Birding Festival at Fort Randall To Host Birding Magazine Editor Ted Floyd

Grab your binoculars and birding guide – it’s time to register for the 2015 South Dakota Fort Randall Birding Festival scheduled for May 1-3, 2015 at Pickstown. It promises to be a spectacular event.

Ted Floyd, editor of Birding magazine, a publication of the American Birding Association, will be the special guest and speaker. Floyd has written four books and more than 150 popular articles. His presentations will include – Bird ID: Starting Over, the Holistic Approach; Skills Workshop: How to Use Gadgets; and the keynote address: Birding Then and Now.

Other presentations will be given by Dr. Dave Swanson (Dept. of Biology – USD) speaking about Shorebirds on the Prairie and Swanson will lead a Birding Banding Workshop. Also presenting will be Lea Ymker (Fairway Seeds, Armour, SD) sharing information on A Backyard Bird Buffet. In addition to the presentations, the weekend will include area field trips. A popular field trip each year is to the Karl Mundt National Wildlife Refuge, next to the Fort Randall Dam. This pristine refuge is not open to the public, but a field trip will be led by USF&WS personal on Sunday.

Whether a veteran birder or just beginning, this festival is an event you won’t want to miss. For additional information on this super birding weekend go to Or call the Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge at 605-487-7603.
